What Not to Flush on a Septic Tank
If it does not break down in the tank, it either mats in the tank or moves toward the field. The short list.
A septic tank settles solids. Paper that turns to pulp is designed for that. Almost everything else is a clog or a shorter pump interval.
Keep out of the toilet
- Wipes — including the ones labeled flushable
- Paper towels, tissues that are not toilet paper
- Feminine products, dental floss, cotton swabs
- Cat litter
- Medications (take-back programs exist for a reason)
- Grease and cooking oil (kitchen line, then the tank). FOG
The kitchen
A garbage disposal is extra solids. It does not make the tank bigger. If you use one, pump more often.
Why it matters
What does not break down either sits in the tank (you pay to pump it sooner) or rides out to the field (you pay a lot more). Failing-field signs.
